As part of our math unit on measurement, we have been thinking about how to know how big something is. We have practices measuring with kid steps and baby steps. We have even used basketball player steps! One thing we have measured was to find out if a fish is a "keeper" or not. Using inch tiles, the students have measured pictures of perch, mackerel, and alewife fish, trying to line the tiles up with no gaps or overlaps. |
We were lucky to have a connection to a local fish biologist. Adelaide's dad came in to talk to us about fish. He had lots of good questions and interesting pictures. But that wasn't the only thing he brought...
Everyone got to touch and look at freeze dried heads and teeth of several different types of fish. They were super cool.
We have been creating little monsters in class, too.
Our friend Scott, who comes in to read with us, happens to be an accomplished clay artist. He came in to help us create monsters out of clay. First he taught us a few tricks for working with clay, like rolling it into a ball and pinching it into shape. He showed us how to roll coils that can be made into other shapes. Then everyone made a little monster.
Last week we glazed the monsters, and today I am firing them in our kiln. We can't wait to see how they turn out when they are finished!
